Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Bangkok Sukhumvit 48

My arrival to staycation at the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham on Sukhumvit 48, Bangkok started in a weekend traffic jam crawling along the Sukhumvit road. Secret fist pump moment to see Bangkok life returning to normal and note to self: next time arrive by public transport. The On-Nut BTS Skytrain station, on the popular Sukhumvit line, is practically outside the door.

Yes, I think there will be a next time. I very much enjoyed my weekend exploring On-Nut and its surrounds and the hotel was fab!

Ramada Plaza by Wyndham

It is such a mint new hotel having only opened its doors to guests on 15th March 2022. If it were not for the manic crazy balloons on the driveway catching our attention, the taxi might have driven past. I love finding places that no one knows about yet!

As it was, when I arrived the security guard assumed I was there for the longer established Wyndham Plaza Residence, their long-stay condominium found behind the hotel. No worries mate, as I trundled my suitcase to the hotel and was soon enjoying a lovely Welcome drink.

Location

On Nut in Upper Sukhumvit is found beyond Thong Lo, Ekkamai, and even Phra Khanong. It’s a rapidly developing area of Bangkok once known only for being the end of the BTS Skytrain line.  However, those in the know enjoy rate this area, it’s an increasingly popular district to work, rest and play and known for its ‘authentic Bangkok’ ambiance.

Once you have mastered the BTS Skytrain you will find it really convenient.

It’s great for a business stay for those working at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) an 8-minute BTS ride away.

It’s not bad for the leisure stay either. I took the last train back from Nana BTS station at midnight, which took 12 minutes, and felt safe returning alone to the hotel.Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Sukhumvit 48 Swimming pool

Lobby Design

The hotel has a modern, timeless feel. When you walk in it has that shiny brand new feel to the lobby, with lots of gold and muted peaceful colours of blues and browns.

It is light and airy with mega high floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s as bright as the smiles of those behind the bold gold reception desk happy to be receiving their first guests.

Kafelogy cafe

My welcome drink gives me time to admire the lobby and to check out Morning Glory Vietnamese Restaurant (see below) and Kafeology cafe.

Kafeology has burst onto Bangkok’s ever-developing coffee culture with five branches across Bangkok and is of interest to those passionate about coffee who enjoy the combination of art and science (the ‘ology bit) in their coffee.

In the corner, Freshbox fridges contain ready meals for those who wish to cook and eat in their room, each room has a microwave cooker.

Deluxe Rooms

There are 200 rooms and suites. The design has the same airy feel as the lobby, with large panoramic windows and city views. The room is really comfortable it’s 40 sqm with both a lounge and working space.

It is spotlessly clean. The only nod to the past couple of years is a ‘Count on US’ notice together with a packet of face masks with a small hand sanitiser bottle.

A few things stood out aside from the size of the room. Firstly the electrics. They have everything covered, you won’t be needing an adapter for a start. I love it when I can plug my Aussie chargers in without a fuss.

Two white perfected sculptured dressing gowns hang in the wardrobe. It feels like they have proudly got everything just so, now all they need are the guests to arrive and fall in love with the place.

The TV on the wall still says Retail Demo on the screen, this is how new the hotel is. When I ask for help setting things up, it appears you’re good to go with your own Netflix account or with YouTube, but the TV channels will be set up the following week.

Have you spotted the microwave? Everything has its place.

The sink was a flash design and the tap has an automatic sensor – you got the impression that a lot of thought has gone into this room. There are plenty of mirrors including a make-up magnified mirror and a quality hairdryer.

The only thing I did not like was the plastic flowers. This room is designed so you feel at home the moment you walk in as if a long-term guest. From a distance in the photos, the flowers look good.

TWIN ROOM

The bedding was super soft. I had a good night’s sleep although I could hear the traffic from Sukhumvit road. So if this worries you, maybe ask for a higher floor (you won’t get very high mind you, the building is only six floors high!)

Bathroom

The bathroom was an elegant grey with black fittings, a rainforest, and a handheld shower with great water pressure and hot water. Don’t laugh at me saying this, it is a brand new hotel. I’m known as an ace Snagging Queen & always able to pick up any teething problems. So I’m always chuffed when everything works as designed.

Toiletries

The convenience packs which included a toothbrush, a sewing kit, and a bar of soap were branded from another Wyndham hotel, another sign of how new things are!

The shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner were in refillable bottles, following Wyndham Green Program.

Tea/Coffee

Each room has a fancy black kettle with an ornate pouring spout and a Minimex drip coffee machine with Kafeology organic Thai Arabica coffee to percolate. The tasting notes offer chocolate, nutty, bittersweet flavour. Nice!

I like that they offer both a good-sized mug and a teacup and saucer.

I’m smiling at this stage because aside from the small details of the TV and the flowers they’ve totally nailed it! It is all in the details and a notch above what I’ve generally found in this standard of a hotel room.

I want one of these kettles!

Morning Glory The Vietnamese Chef’s Table Restaurant

Morning Glory a Vietnamese restaurant is quickly establishing a reputation in the area and is popular with local workers who love the extensive menu serving up simple, fresh well-priced lunch options from street food to banquets.

Breakfast

My breakfasts were a mixture of western and Vietnamese food. Scrambled egg, bacon and white bread toast, orange juice, iced water, and a Vietnamese dessert.

LUNCH/DINNER

Our lunch, hosted by Wyndham Hotels and Resorts showcases a variety of dishes from The Vietnamese Chef’s Table, starting with pork and shrimp summer rolls and Cha Gio – imperial seafood spring rolls (220 baht). offering a variety of Vietnamese starters.

Our main course was a choice of dishes. I always say at these events let the Chef choose as I like to see what arrives. The choice was either Pho Thit Lo – Vietnamese pork noodle, Bun Bo Hue, spicy beef noodle with Vermicelli, or Banh Xeo Vietnamese crispy pancakes with Turmeric Fish (400 baht) with a dessert of Sakoo Melon.

Head chef, Valit Lerdpunya

We meet the restaurant’s head chef, Khun Valit a veteran of Vietnamese cuisine who tells us he’s pleased with the way the restaurant has established itself.

Dinners can choose from a 15-course Chef’s Table experience for four to 12 persons at 1,000 baht net per person, or a shabu shabu buffet, priced at 799 baht per person. This features all-you-can-order appetisers and hot pot items including beef and pork cooked at your table during a two-hour period.

Rooftop Pool & Fitness Centre

The rooftop pool is not humungous (12 metre) but perfectly adequate for a short swim and you can settle in with panoramic city views from your sunlounger.

As you can if working out on the roof terrace, at their well-equipped fitness studio which is open 24 hours.

Spa

Opening later in the year.

Branded Residence

This is one of four newly opened Bangkok hotels for the Wyndham Hotels Group. For each, they also offer longer-term condo-hotel stays on the same site. They refer to this as their Branded Residences offering exclusive hotel services.

Service

It is the service side for both the hotels and the branded residences that Wyndham Hotel Group pride itself on. They have 83 million enrolled members in their Wyndhams Reward loyalty program for that very reason! I found the staff here eager to please, although not especially knowledgeable about what to see and do in the neighbourhood.

Value for money

There are some great deals to be had during this soft opening phase. My Deluxe room with Agoda was THB 1,229.12

You can expect to pay less here than some of the more centrally located Bangkok hotels, and as I found with only 12 mins on the BTS to Asoke and Nana stations, this area is convenient.

Things to know

This is a soft opening so do check what is open, I would love to return with the spa open, although there are plenty of massage options in the area.

Overall experience

An attractive stay for the budget-conscious looking for a fab new hotel. The great room, service-orientated staff, conveniently placed for On Nut BTS and BITEC. Kafelogy and Morning Glory restaurant are drawcards in their own right.
