For wannabe solo female travellers

Do you often dream of jetting off and seeing the world? Ready to escape the grind of everyday life? Would you like to travel but are not sure if you’re brave enough to go it alone?

Well, why not come to a country that is ready to greet you with open arms and has already done some of the leg work to identify fabulous destinations for solo female travellers?

DESTINATION GUIDES

There are six destinations highlighted by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for solo female travel in their new publication: Me, Myself & Thailand

  • Bangkok
  • Chiang Mai
  • Kanchanaburi
  • Nan
  • Nong Khai
  • Phuket

I have just about been bursting, waiting for this launch to write about my earlier invitation to attend the Me, Myself & Thailand product testing trip to Nan.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

I love the way TAT has chosen their unique experiences. Time to paint your toenails blue ladies and let’s go adventuring:

  • Conquering Mountains
  • Searching for my soul
  • Live like a local
  • Recharge
  • Make a difference

Looking at the Bangkok section, I’m impressed. I have lived here for three years and there is plenty for me to check out that is new and different.

Note to self: must get to the Glass Tray skywalk experience at King Power MahaNakhon and why have I never been to the King Prajadhipok Museum?

LET’S SPEAK THAI

There is a useful section on Let’s speak Thai. Generally, I can get by with limited Thai but you will find that once you’re here, a few words will go a long way. I’m going to add in two others that I think will be helpful:

Turn left:

Leī̂yw ŝāy

Turn right:

Leī̂yw k̄hwā

When you know how to turn left or right anywhere in the world, you will be able to reach the mountain you want to conquer!

DOs and DON’TS in THAILAND

This handy section contains some useful tips of what to do and avoid whilst here in Thailand.

There are some things you may already know like do not drink water from the taps, do not buy Buddha images and some things which are easy to get wrong if you don’t know like don’t touch anyone’s head, nor approach a monk, or bring in e-cigarettes into Thailand as they are illegal.

I always tell my visitors to make sure you look where you’re going here in Thailand. In Bangkok especially, life is busy on the sidewalks, and it’s not the time to looking for directions on your mobile phone!

There is another one which is: Do NOT worry about the medical side of things. If you do trip over, or unexpectedly need medical assistance Thailand has great hospitals here in Bangkok. We are a world leader in medical tourism.

Solo Travel Report:

Would it surprise you to know that Solo Female travel is a growing trend?  A Booking.com survey resulted in a Solo Travel Report that revealed that 72% of American women are taking solo journeys.

  • Solo travellers are frequent travellers – once you’ve got the taste for solo travel nothing stops you!
  • By Age – the biggest single age group of solo travellers were in my demographic of the over 55-years-old. The next biggest age group was under 25 years old.
  • By Education – Solo travellers are highly educated.
Solo Female Traveler’s motivation:

I love the way women are taking charge of their lives. We want to see more of the world and are not willing to wait for others. We’ve gathered up the confidence to make that first step and we haven’t looked back.

When women travel solo, they enjoy the liberating freedom to do what we want, when we want. Let’s face it as women often our lives run around schedules of other people. As wives, mothers, as caregivers or animal lovers, it often involves food and getting someone fed!

The thought of solo travel maybe a little scary too, but that’s exactly the point. When women were asked what their motivation was to travel alone, it wasn’t just to go on a lovely jolly to lie by the beach and do nothing… Well, not for the whole holiday!

Women wanted to feel like they accomplished something, they wanted to learn new skills, meet new people and be challenged.

So how about a trip to Thailand? Come to the Land of Smiles and find a tourism industry that is not only welcoming of you, but it is also geared up to give you the best time ever as a solo female traveller in Amazing Thailand.

I hope I have inspired you for a Me, Myself and Thailand trip

Come for a wander with me in Nan and let’s see what it can offer you. I can’t wait to see you in the Land of Smiles!

At this time, if I were to travel, it would be solo. Something to consider.

I’ve done a lot of solo travel although I do think it’s often more fun with someone else… I love travelling with my kids as they are such good company.

I love visiting you and seeing all the local sights. In college one of my favorite people was a student from Thailand. I still occasionally think of him and wonder how he is.
