Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre Hotel Review

by wrensrambles@gmail.com

Have you taken a wander recently in the National Convention Centre part of Bangkok? You should. The changes afoot are impressive for both business and leisure. Between the revamped Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC) and the new Benjakitti Forest Park, this area is turning into the place to be!

The recently opened Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre is perfectly positioned for the expected influx of visitors looking to stay close to both locations. It offers both a hotel and a Branded Residence for those wanting long-stay options.

Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre

For those of us who love hotel wows, the city skyline view from the rooftop infinity pool, Falcon Secret Bar and the charming Marie Guimar restaurant are pretty spectacular. I found the spacious rooms had everything needed for a great staycation.

Won’t you come for a wander with me as I show you around?

Location

The hotel is tucked behind Thanon Ratchadaphisek in the Khlong Toei district of Central Bangkok. It is fabulously well located for both the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre and the connecting BTS station within 50 metres. The new business district on Rama IV Road is a short drive.

The Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre BTS station connects at Sukhumvit with Asoke one way, and to Lumpini Park in the other direction.

Lobby Design

At first glance, the modern tower block is architecturally unprepossessing and rather bland compared with some around the Sukhumvit area & those overlooking Benjakitti lake.

But it’s inside the gates that matter. Here you find an inner courtyard garden with a thundering vertical waterfall which gives a taste of what’s to come.  Inside the light and airy foyer the granite, marble, and glass-topped tables are so highly polished you can see reflections everywhere.

A black spiral staircase dominates, so of course, I had to walk up and down it. It just screams Instagram photos!

KAFEOLOGY

In the corner, you will spot one of five new branches of Bangkok Kafelogy cafes which are impressing those passionate about coffee. This is the place to hang out if you enjoy freshly roasted coffee.

Deluxe King Bedroom

I loved the spacious room (58 sqm) one of 150 rooms and suites offering a condo-hotel guest experience. There is a galley kitchenette, lounge area and a work desk in the window. There is a dining table with an electric hob, microwave, washing machine and lounge space with a sofa and a 55 inch Flat Screen HDTV.

The room has floor to ceiling windows and the decor is beige, beige and beige with the blue and turquoise cushions the only splash of colour. I was surprised there was no artwork on the walls, unlike in the branded residence rooms we were shown.

Except that is for the toilet with its fancy blue light. Those of you who love a heated loo seat will be well impressed. This is a high class room in every way.

Toiletries

You have everything you need here, even as this was my 158th Thailand Staycations, I’m still chuffed when I find a toothbrush. The shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner were in refillable bottles, following Wyndham Green Program.

Rooftop Garden

Infinity Pool

You should not miss a swim at sunset, it was a joy! Especially as I had the entire pool to myself. The swimming pool has a hot tub at one end, I wasn’t sure how to turn it on, but I wasn’t fussed because it was a dreamy swim in the bath-like warm waters watching Bangkok’s night time skyline come alive.

Honestly, this pool is in the running for the hotly contested best newcomer in the Rooftop Pools of Bangkok – well it would be if there was such an award.

SKY Gym

Whilst I swam there were a few working out in the gym, again what a view. TheTechnogym is open 24/7 for guests and long-stay residents. I’m loving how they get so much greenery around the place even way up high.

Co-Kitchen Space

On the 33rd Floor, you will find Co-Kitchen which is available for advanced guest bookings. This offers guests and long-stay residents the opportunity to invite friends and work colleagues to a small gathering and cook their own food. Co-Kitchen is also available for cooking classes.

This is a nice add on for those staying. I could see this being of interest to both the leisure and business markets.

Falcon Secret Bar

You need to fly high to find this bar on the 34th floor (opening soon), and you need to walk up the stairs. Not all 34 floors you will be pleased to know and anyway the wall art is fab.

I’ve not been able to check out the standard of their mixologists (yet!) but you know I already think the views are fab. Can’t you just imagine taking up a position on those red seats for sunset with a cocktail in hand or a glass from the impressive cellar of world wines?

Marie Guimar Restaurant

The moment we came out of the lift on the 28th floor amid all the elegant hanging lanterns there was a collective gasp. The pretty decor and green with gold touches have been designed by Charif Lona a Thailand based interior designer with a daring sense of style. Nailed it for my taste and that before I even eat anything! The rooftop Chao Phraya river view is a bonus and yes the Thai cuisine was excellent.

The restaurant is named after Marie Guimar who was a Japanese-Portuguese woman who introduced Portuguese-influenced desserts like Thong Yod (Golden Drops) and Foi Thong (Golden Threads) to Thailand back in the Ayutthaya period. But don’t expect to find either Ayutthaya recipes or Portuguese fusion at this restaurant.

Marie Guimar Restaurant

What you will find instead is Royal Thai cuisine taken from ancient cookbooks and rare recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

I’m pleased to see a Thai restaurant here, so often the luxury hotels try to compete by offering international cuisine. There is certainly space for great Thai restaurants in the luxury hotel market.

LUNCH/Dinner

Our lunch, hosted by Wyndham Hotels and Resorts showcases a variety of exciting dishes exquisitely presented using the freshest of ingredients and all prepared in house.

We enjoyed appetizers of Meing Lotus Flower and Deep Fried Taro with Shrimp & Herbs.

Marie Guimar Restaurant Appetisers

The main course included lots of prawns! We had both King Prawn and River Prawn spicy dip, alongside Beef Cheek Massaman Curry or how about some Stir-Fried Cowslip Creeper and Prawn and a Bamboo Pulp Clear Soup with Chicken?

It was an elegant banquet which I could see impressing guests. This is a suitable venue for all occasions from expat lunches, to a romantic candlelit dinner for two, or those looking to make an impact at a corporate function.

The Branded Residence concept

This hotel has dual occupancy use with both long-stay residents and short-stay hotel guests. Their aim is to make your stay ‘like a homecoming’ however long you reside.

This is one of four newly opened Bangkok hotels for the Wyndham Hotels Group offering dual occupancy. Wyndham offers long stay guests their Branded Residence concept with exclusive hotel services.

Service

I found the service and the support they offer to guests to be warm and attentive. The front desk concierge team are a useful resource for life in Bangkok. Communication via the Line App with the front desk was super responsive.

Local Attractions

BenjakitTi Forest Park

Benjakitti Park is a fabulous leisure destination, giving Lumpini Park a run for its money with the new extension into Benjakitti Forest Park. And wait there’s more! An elevated walkway joins Lumpini Park to Benjakitti Park and lake.

Benjakitti Park lake

Who said Bangkok was disappointing for its green spaces? Not I! And certainly not anyone who lives or stays within walking, running and cycling distance of this fabulous park, as Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre is.

Benjakitti Forest Park has been developed on the former tobacco factory plantation covering an area of 172 acres, it’s one of the largest green spaces in Bangkok.

Great for nature lovers, fitness fans and lovely photographers – between the selfie crowd and the romance market, that’s got most of Bangkok covered!

Queen Sirikit NATIONAL Convention Centre

The new impressive expansion of the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre shows confidence in the potential for growth in the conference and special events (MICE) sector.

The upgraded Queen Sirik National Convention Centre is five times larger than before and includes a variety of retail spaces – you know how Bangkok loves its shopping malls! It reopens in September 2022 in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2022. When the eyes of the world will be upon this area.

Queen Sirikit Convention Centre APEC 2022Nearly finished the QSNCC is still under wraps

The convention centre can accommodate up to 100,000 visitors per day. No wonder hotels in the area are jockeying for positions and hoping to benefit from the expected economic revival that comes with this.

MEDPARK HOSPITAL

Hopefully, you won’t need the medical services of MedPark hospital whilst staying. If you do, it is reassuring to note that one of Bangkok’s leading new hospitals is just across the road. MedPark Hospital offers more than 30 branches of specialist doctors.

I had my Covid booster vaccination here and whilst staying I needed a Fit to Fly PCR test. The Concierge arranged everything for me, including a better price than I could obtain locally. This service and the ease of walking there were excellent with incredible facilities. The doctors and nurses that I’ve seen all have good international language skills.

EL MERCADO

A local eatery not to be missed for those who enjoy Mediterranean food is El Mercado, it’s within walking distance. Found in a charming old house this delightful restaurant will wow you with everything from their fresh meats and cheese and their premium fresh supermarket dedicated to food lovers. Starting with breakfast you could seriously graze all day here, all at reasonable prices.

Overall experience

Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre was opened in December 2021 and is already impressing those looking for a smart place to stay. I really enjoyed this hotel and my prediction is that it will be a hotel that will be talked about big time, once word gets out and especially once the National Convention Centre opens its doors.

For those looking for either a leisure stay or especially a corporate stay then check out the Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre.
