If, as Thomas Jefferson famously said, ‘coffee is the favourite drink of the civilised world’
then we hereby declare Bangkok super civilised.
Together with Andrea @midlifeadventuring we proclaimed ourselves as the Coffee Queens’ of New York City and Melbourne, Australia, and set off on the great Bangkok coffee challenge set for us by Expique Tours Bangkok.
Our brief was to seek out 9 of the best coffee shops experiences in Bangkok. It was a mammoth task in a city that has come of age in regards to coffee. Oh the fun we had, we were on a coffee high for months!
Table of Contents
COFFEE IN THAILAND
Thai’s traditionally enjoy their coffee strong and super sweet from the street vendor usually with Carnation milk.
“Three decades ago, coffee drinkers in Thailand largely had two choices, Kafae Boran or instant coffee. But over the past 20 years, the country’s tea-drinking tradition has given way to full-blown coffee culture. More consumers have developed a thirst for coffee, especially freshly brewed, and are willing to pay a premium for a nice cuppa. The business of catering to coffee drinkers in Thailand is booming, with an annual market estimated at 36 billion baht and rising.” (see Bangkok Post Special Report)
Here are our best efforts to find a great western style coffee, in a great setting (yes it had to look good on the ‘Gram), usually with a super brunch or Insta worthy cake thrown in.
If you want to see where they take their coffee Thai-style then join us on the Bangkok Breakfast tour
Poony Poony Coffee
E??????? ?????? ??????? ?? ?????????, ?? ? ??????? ? ???? ???? ??????? ??????.
So it says on the top of the drinks menu I am perusing.
Poony is a Melbourne barista stranded in Thailand since the pandemic ruined his family holiday plans. ?? ??????? ????. He’s now been going almost 2 years, lucky Bangkok!
We’ve travelled to some back street residential area of Bangkok – a new part of town for me – to meet Poony. I’m sitting on a teeny weeny chair in the front room of our city’s latest specialty coffee location.
Poony did not miss a heartbeat in establishing his unique coffee offering to help Bangkokians get through their darkest COVID moments.
Setting up with a borrowed coffee machine and some kindergarten school furniture hastily gathered from Mum. He turned the family front room into a coffee shop. Poony is a living example of the old adage: ???? ???? ????? ??? ??????, ???? ????? …babyccino ?????? or something like that!
Melbourne’s loss is Bangkok’s gain. So here we are I’ll have the barista choice rum filter coffee. It’s served in a wine glass. In more ways than one, I love Poony’s style.
We can’t decide which of the three cakes to choose from. ?? ??? ??, let’s have one of each!

Sarnies Bangkok & New! Sarnies Roastery:
Ticks all the boxes! Great coffee & menu with an old town vibe
The hip Singaporian coffee chain Sarnies is a fair dinkum winner for its coffee in a two-story old-world shophouse that will surprise and delight. The building may be 150 years old, but the Aussie-style cafe menu is as fresh and contemporary as you will find anywhere.
Once a workshop for boat engines, the black oil and smoke stains on the walls provide a historic backdrop. What you’ll find in your cup is a fresh and delightful cup of coffee.
From the wooden floorboards and exposed brickwork, there’s a fair amount of thought that goes into everything here.
The coffee beans are sourced globally including closer to home Northern Thailand but are all roasted locally before creating your perfect cup of coffee.

A light-filled pet-friendly version of Sarnie’s Bangkok and are still doing their bit offering us the best coffee. I love the house-blended Tiramasu and of course, at Christmas, they offer the best mince pies I have found.
The coffee that brings the city to life!

(Not Just) Another Cup
Never Disappoints
As the name suggests the reason this continues to be my go-to place in Bangkok to hang out, work, and meet friends is that it is a cut above the average coffee shop. The coffee is excellent, the food is healthy, and the smoothies are delicious. Equally as good for brunch or lunch.
There are 8 different types of Latte – Beetroot, Golden Latte, Sea Salt Caramel Latte, Iced toffee Nut latte along with all your favourite Espressos, Americanos – Iced, and Hot coffee combos you desire.
It’s wise to book ahead if you plan to visit for breakfast/brunch on the weekends.

Gallery Drip Coffee
Creative Coffee with Flair
When the Barista is wearing a T-shirt that proclaims ‘Coffee can turn strangers into best friends, you know you’re going to like, no love, the place.
All coffee served here is a performance. It’s quite a floor show, water is poured from high from stainless steel pots into the drip filters below. Each brew is produced with an air of solemn earnest to produce the drip coffee perfection.
Overhead hundreds of paper coffee cups create a wave and you realize you are surrounded by a shop selling all manners of drip coffee paraphernalia.
Bonus, Gallery Drip Coffee is strategically situated across the street from the MBK Center which makes it a perfect stop to fuel up or refuel on a Bangkok Shopping Spree.

Wallflowers Cafe
Insta-Lovers Cafe
This secret cafe venue tucked away in a side alley hosts Wallflowers Cafe and Bakery by day and Wallflowers Upstairs serving fusion food with live music by night.
This is an Instagrammer’s paradise and as such, it can be a little annoying when you just want a cup of coffee and a cake but it is worth persevering past the photographers to climb the insta-special stairwell.
This is the sort of place you’d be mad not to have the full flower bed of offerings. The coffee is divine, the cake is a work of art, everything is exquisite from the china plates to the floral decorations. The coffee and cake are not the cheapest but the quality is top-notch.

Hello, I would like some cake and coffee please. What a wonderful post, I love coffee. All of the cafes look beautiful and have talented baristas. Enjoy your day, have a happy weekend.
Hi Eileen – at some point we will have that coffee together for sure. I would love it if you come to Bangkok for Coffee and Cake!
Have a great week!

Wow! Your list of coffee houses in Bangkok is amazing. I hope to one day go back and visit Bangkok as I was last there in 2009 and taste the coffee!
Hi Julie – when you make it back to Bangkok, let me know I’ll treat you to a coffee!

What a great selection! I meant to tell you that Michael Portillo is doing one of his Great Asian Railway Journeys and stayed at the Oriental. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000dtq2 x
There is no end of coffee choices here, I know Michael Portillo would have had a lovely coffee at the Mandarin Oriental too! Thank for sending me through the link, I will enjoy this!

Wow, lots of coffee choices.
Yes, thanks Liz the hard part was trying to decide what made the cut!
Have a lovely week.

Oh my and here I thought that the Pacific Northwest US was *the* place for coffee, especially Seattle and Portland of course. Because of the frequent chilly wet and gray winter days, Northwesterners run on coffee and there are some great places. But my goodness Bangkok has outdone us. And your post makes me miss a good Latte — here in subtropical Florida there is definitely not a coffee place on every corner like there is back home. I would love this about Bangkok — good weather and good coffee it looks like!!
Sallie – well after your wonderful thoughts on our Bangkok coffee scene, I think it is only fair to invite you over to check it out. My shout, of course 🙂
I’m now thinking I need to come and check out the coffee in the Pacific Northwest as well!
Have a great week
