Five thoughts on Sorrento, Victoria
1. I first went to Sorrento thirty years ago just after finishing school, but it was Sorrento, Italy! I never imagined all those years ago, that not only would I be living in Australia, but I would be back again enjoying summers in Sorrento.
Both Sorrentos are coastal towns, one facing the Bay of Naples, the other on Port Phillip Bay. Sorrento, Victoria was named after the southern Italien town, which explains why you can find a great pizza in Sorrento!
2. One of our favourite things to do with visitors is the Sorrento-Portsea Artist Trail. It is no surprise to anyone who has been to Sorrento that it has been a favourite spot for many famous Australian Artists. In this walk, you can view the original painting whilst looking at the original inspiration being painted.
3. The Sorrento foreshore is a popular place to hang out in the summer because of the gentle, sheltered waters against a backdrop of lawns, shelters and lawn. This photo below doesn’t do it justice as it was after a big storm. We walked with international guests and there was no end of debris and fish on the beaches, which was not the look we were after! We even saw a dead Fairy Penguin, which even if sad, was exotic!
What is sad about this photo is that The Baths, the building with the green roof, a popular restaurant and location for weddings, was destroyed by fire last October. Happily on our last visit, the renovations are well underway.
4. Another of our favourite walks in this area is the Coppins Track walk from Diamond Bay to Sorrento Ocean Beach. As you wind your way around the coastline towards the surf beach, you have several sandy beaches and rocky outcrops to admire.
5. Sorrento Back Beach is a favourite patrolled surf beach amongst those wanting more action than at the Bay beaches. I love this walk especially as there is a nice restaurant called All Smiles, which you will be after this walk! But we’ve not come all this way without a dip in the Ocean
So flip flops, thongs… whatever you call them, off, we’re going in!
